Mrs. Maureen Quinn - 1st Grade  (Send e-mail)

My name is Maureen Quinn. I have been teaching first grade at St. Peter's for eleven years. I love it more everyday. Teaching children this age is truly a treat. We are working very hard on reading, math skills and getting along with each other.

This week in class

Monday
Spelling Words - am, hat, at, cat, has, and, God, mom
DOL sentence - Ava has a red hat.
Going forward there will be two grade on the spelling test. The top grade is for the words and the grade under the line is for the sentence. I correct for punctuation and grammar in the sentence. i try and use names of classmates for our sentences. I try and start with the easiest names.
We will be starting our "star chart" on Friday, September 10. This is our form of discipline. Every student gets 5 starts every week. If they don't lose a star, they get a beautiful, amazing home-made magnet at the end of the week. If the lose a star, there is no magnet on Friday. If they go all year without losing a star there is a prize at the end of the year. Last year I had 16 kids that didn't lose a star. Tuesday
Homework - Writing assignment - September 8th is Mary's birthday. What could you give her for a present?

I am still looking for center help on Tuesday morning and to trade every other week with Mrs. Wansek on Thursday morning. We are almost covered. Thank you again for sharing your time. Please consider taking one of the above slots. We are hoping to start morning centers this week on Thursday and afternoon centers will start the week of September 20. Thanks for all your support

Wednesday
Homework - Describe the best sound to wake up to in the morning.

Thursday
Homework - Study for spelling test

Don't worry if some work papers come home with no grades on them. If they are not graded we did them as practice in groups.

If you get papers home with the words do or finish on them, please have your child complete them and return them to school. THANKS

Friday
Next week I will start sending journals home to be signed. They will come home on Thursday. It will either be their desk journal, journal table journal or math journal. EVERYONE is developing differently. Please praise your child for the work that they have done and encourage them to do even more. Some children are writing the journal prompt. Some children are writing stories. It is our job to get them to do their best job and reach farther. You will be surprised as the year progresses how much they expand on their writing. Please find the last page your child has written on and sign your name. THANKS
