Ash Can Lady Back in 1973 when I was in 4th grade at St. Pete's, we had some serious lunch room ladies. One with jet black hair put us all in our place regarding our trash. She stood at the front of the lunch room and rang a hand-held bell against her hip to get our attention. We stopped eating our Libby's chocolate pudding, cheese sandwiches and Fritos and listened. It was clear she was saying something about cleaning up after ourselves, and told us to put stuff in the "Ash Can." What on earth was an "Ash Can?" Our young and inattentive minds finally realized she was talking about garbage. Why not just say it? Maybe she was too delicate to refer to our refuse in such a vulgar way. To this day, many of us still laugh about the Ash Can Lady. Bless her heart. -Jane Mrazek Flanders [4/21/2010]
